Toyota Selects Huntsville-Based Turner Universal For Foundation Project

Toyota Motor Manufacturing North America has awarded the second construction package for its Alabama engine plant to Turner Universal Construction of Huntsville. Turner will work from now through mid-January to prepare the foundation for the 400,000-sq.-ft. plant scheduled to open in 2003.

Construction of Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Alabama (TMMAL) is on schedule, according to Jeff Caldwell of Toyota's plant engineering division. Huntsville-based APAC -- Alabama, Inc. has recently completed site preparation work.

"Turner has always been a good performer for Toyota," said Caldwell. "We anticipate the same high quality work from them on this project as well."

Turner Universal's project includes "H-piling" and reinforced concrete foundation work. Turner Universal Construction has 40 offices across North America, including the one in Huntsville. The company previously has done  work for Toyota's Kentucky, Indiana and Ontario construction projects.

TMMAL is a $220 million investment and will employ 350 people when production begins in spring 2003. The plant will produce 120,000 V8 engines per year for the full-size Tundra pick-up truck that is built in Princeton, Ind.
